VICTORY TOUR..Yellowstone

MADISON ARM CAMPGROUND YELLOWSTONE..Thursday

We’ve arrived! The park is so beautiful, words really cannot describe the variety and uniqueness of the scenery. This is one of the very special places in our country.

The campground is lovely, the river 100 yards from our campsites. We were lucky and got assigned adjacent sites. As we came through the park from the Gardner entrance all the campgrounds had “full” signs posted.

The day began with Diane proving that she had the appropriate WAC nickname...River Dancer. She earned that name when we were kayaking the Current River in Missouri. Diane came down the river pirouetting in graceful circles.

This morning before we even exited the campground she found herself on a one way the wrong way, and corrected that little problem with a full circle u turn to head the right way.

Then she made a right turn out of the campground. But we needed to go left, so down the road she rambled until she found a place to make another u turn!

Yep, River Dancer she is!!

Entering the park Luanne was treated to the bubbling hot springs steaming away and our first buffalo sighting. All she really wants to see is a moose, and if we don’t find one in the park I may have to take her to a place that ten years ago they used to come every morning to drink.

The rest of the day was very uneventful other than getting a text from my grandchildren who are tent camping in the Colorado Springs area. We worried about them and the bear situation. I was happy to get the text telling me they were well and headed north, but that the two nights they camped there were bear in the campground both nights!

YELLOWSTONE...Friday

Luanne says “I just LOVE camping, this is a beautiful area and great campground!”

That about sums up our feelings about our trip.

We went to Old Faithful early yesterday. Our timing was great and we saw two eruptions, the second really spectacular.

Our trip from Madison to Old Faithful ordinarily is very slow because the wildlife show brings traffic to a standstill. We had only one “almost” sighting on the way over, we just missed seeing a moose, which is Luanne’s big wish for the trip. There weren’t even any buffalo in the meadows, I don’t know where they all were.

We drove the Firehole Canyon and were planning on going down to the swimming hole but found the access blocked because of high waters. The Firehole River was raging through the canyon and the cataracts were fearsome.

After we returned to the campground we got all the fly fishing gear assembled and had lesson time for Diane. She’s a natural and handled her rod well. The Madison and Firehole rivers converge at our campground and it is good fishing just a short walk from our sites. We went down late afternoon and it was so beautiful. I had a strike and Luanne had a tiny baby but we aren’t deterred. Today we head into West Yellowstone and the fly shop and I’ll find out what fly the fish here like to eat.

We were enjoying our campfire and beer when I spotted elk in the woods behind us. They were back again this morning and Diane and Luanne got pictures.

We have no wifi or phone service in the park, so this will be posted from West Yellowstone. No more updates until Monday evening when we will be in Butte, Montana as we make our way north to Glacier National Park.
