We've now been at Skidaway State Park in Georgia for two nights.  It's a beautiful park, full of palm trees and spanish moss (my cousin Sandra would love it!!!)  This is a birders paradise, it's too bad not one of the three of us knows one bird from the other.  We've taken long walks back into the marsh areas, followed beautiful boats along the inland waterway.

The park is totally full, but we were very lucky with the three sites we have, they are huge and you have lots of privacy.  I put up the screen room and have been cooking there, and last night we had a great fire and watched Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil after the fire burned down.

There are two women campers we are calling the "Twins", we haven't talked to them, but we have seen them twice.  They are sixtyish and dressed alike from head to toe, shoes to grey hair!!  Quite the sight!

We have been geocaching, there was a seven step puzzle to determine the final combination to a locked box, we had a rough bike ride over roots and through sand but it was great fun.  My bum is just a bit sore today!

We're going to Savanna tomorrow.

Charleston, SC

A few more pictures!

Charleston, SC

Teddy and I were both happy to find sunshine when we arrived at James Island Campground in Charleston, SC.  This park would be great for the kids during the summer, it has a huge water park, a climbing tower, a dog park and it is only about 15 minutest from downtown Charleston.

I'm posting this from my stop in Savannah because I've not had wifi.  Makes it a bit difficult to keep up!

The drive here was the longest I've done, over 400 miles and I was surprised at how easy it was and how comfortable Saffire was to drive.  The only thing that makes it difficult is when the big trucks pass with their slipstream, and that is simply a matter of being alert for their coming up behind me.

Luanne and her dog Tucker had already been in camp for three days by the time we arrived.  She had been on Hunting Island with her friend Robin for a week.  Teddy and Tucker had a wild time getting reacquainted.

We spent two days in Charleston wandering around.   The old district is wonderful.  I love just looking at the iron work on the gates, and the history surrounds you as you walk the streets in the Battery.  We wandered through the Market, which has been in the same spot almost 200 years.  One of the traditional crafts in the area is the sweetgrass basket weaving which the African black families brought to America with them.  I bought a small one for Saffire, I appreciate the time and talent it takes to make these and am enjoying my new fruit bowl!

While wandering the market I spotted a young black man, an artist who has won several awards for his work.  He had prints which I liked very much.  My granddaughter Zoe has just had her bedroom remodeled and I bought two prints for her room.  I hope she likes them as much as I do!  The artist signed the prints for me and said to tell her his signature would one day be famous!!!

We had lunch one day at Magnolia's, a restaurant listed in the 1000 Places to See Before You Die!  And lunch was to die for!!!!!  I had shrimp, lobster, scallops and grits and my mouth is still watering.  And I can't forget the bloody mary which was one of the best I've ever had!

After a pleasant few days in Charleston we caravanned to our next spot, Skidaway State Park in Georgia, just outside of Savannah.

Alexander City, AL

I'm in Alexander City, AL to visit old friends Mary Lloyd and Robert.  They've moved into a new house since I've last visited so it was a double treat to see them and their new abode.  Their area is quite hilly, but Saffire had no trouble, scraping the bike rack just a bit when we pulled into their driveway.

After lots of visiting and a wonderful dinner the first evening, Mary Lloyd and I decided to go to Wind Creek Campground at Lake Martin for the next two nights.  We made a visit to a great new grocery store at the Lake and then found a wonderful site on a point at the Lake.

It was raining when we pulled in, and continued to rain almost constantly for the next two days.  Day one about four o'clock the sky cleared and we thought we'd have a nice day for hiking and exploring to follow.  We sat on the beach and had cocktails and watched the boats go by.  We  had a beautiful sunset before we retreated to Saffire for the night, and yes, the rain began again.  It was a tropical rain, straight down and as if someone had a bucket they just dumped and dumped on you.

It continued to rain through the next afternoon, and we later learned that a record 6.5 inches of rain had come down!!  Saffire had a small leak over the door I'll have to look into, but it took the very worst of the rain for the leak to start.

We survived with good conversation, good food, good movies and good books!  The payoff was coming out of Saffire Monday evening and looking up to a sky so full of stars it left you speechless!

One more evening back at home in Alex City, leaving for Charleston, SC with many thanks to Mary Lloyd and Robert!!!

March 13 Holly Springs, MS

Chewalla Lake National Forest Campground was our destination for night two.  I had hoped to explore Holly Springs, MS before moving on to Alabama, but rain was with me the entire trip. We had a break long enough to set up camp and have a nice walk, but not for roaming through town.  Holly Springs has over 200 beautiful old antebellum homes, and just driving through town to get to the campground was a treat.  The town is just south of Memphis and is worth the drive if you are in the area.

Chewalla Lake is a pretty little campground, a swimming lake and walking trails all over.  It looks as if it would be a very popular spot during the summer, but in the cold rain there were only two of us camping along with the camp host.

The camp host had quite an interesting setup, as you can see!  He was a character to match his home, and evangelic minister who loved the Lord's outdoors!!  I enjoyed talking with him for a few minutes before we headed out in the morning.

Still raining....next stop Alexander City, AL

Whoo Hoo, we've made our first real trip in Saffire.  We've only driven 120 miles south of St. Louis for the night, but all went well on the drive and we are warm and cozy even though it is 20 degrees outside.  It was really easy to pull in and plug in, I know there will be times I miss the Aliner but this is sure convenient.

I'm at an RV park because I wanted to watch ER tonight, but the TV won't change channels without a remote and I have no remote!  I hope that's the worst of the things I'll learn as we travel.

Teddy is feeling his way around here, not quite sure what is going on but being good as usual.
We're going to Holly Springs, MS tomorrow to a park near a lake there.  Holly Springs has a lot of antebellum homes and I'm hoping the sun comes out when we get to town.  We're going to take a walk and it would be fun to take some pictures of the houses.

I'll post some pictures when I get to Alabama!
