THE BIG SOUTH FORK NATIONAL RIVER AND RECREATION AREA
Encompassing 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area protects the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries. The area boasts miles of scenic gorges and sandstone bluffs, is rich with natural and historic features and has been developed to provide visitors with a wide range of outdoor recreational activities.
The WAC’s chose the Bandy Creek Campground, located between Jamestown and Oneida, TN as the location for the fall outing this year.
Teddy and I left St. Louis on Thursday morning with a stop over at a KOA in Bowling Green. The drive was pleasant though not especially pretty and challenging the last two plus hours of the drive as we were on narrow two lane roads with many twists and turns. We approached the park from the west through Jamestown and I was glad we had after I saw the hairpin switchbacks and 14% grade going to the east and Oneida.
We met Luanne and Tucker in a little town and had brunch on Friday morning. It was good to see them again and we were anxious to get to Bandy and checkout where we were going to be spending the next two weeks.
Teresa was already there when we arrived and we readily agreed we had found a wonderful spot. The campground was very nice, not far from the river to play, plenty of hikes right from our sites and lots of places to ride the bikes. There was also a huge mown field, good for running the dogs, but BEST for playing softball!!
It was quiet for about two seconds, then the Aframes began to arrive! By the time everyone came on Sunday the group included Luanne; Teresa; Jeanne; Me; Diane; Pantless; Erma; Bama Deb; Linda; Ellen; Erlene; Cheryle; Jenni; Dixie; Janis; Crasher Deb; Gail; Elaine; Gail; Paul; Terri and BJ, with Elizabeth dropping in to meet everyone.
It was amazing to see everyone again and to meet the new members.
The campground is remote, so no wifi for me and of course, as always with the iPhone, no service. Before my next trip I’m going to get a prepaid Verizon phone for emergency use! I want to record some memories of the trip, but this will not be typical journal entries.
BJ flew in from California and shared Saffire with me for several nights. I really enjoyed meeting her and look forward to camping with her again. She is a river rat and had a great time on the kayaking trip down the river. This river has a reputation for eating boats in the springtime with class IV rapids to contend with. After a long dry spell the river was pretty tame for the recreational kayaking. I let BJ take my kayak and didn’t go the first day. I had a pleasant day at camp and I fixed dinner for the hungry crew when they returned.
We had a GREAT time playing softball, and we were all surprised about how well us old gals can still hit and field! I really enjoyed playing catch too and am glad to have a couple of gloves in Saffire to play with.
The gang threw a great surprise birthday party for me. They had decorated everything in a princess theme, had cake, cupcakes and we made homemade ice cream in individual plastic bags. It was so much fun and it was the first surprise party I ever had!!
We kayaked one day at a nearby lake. There were lots of good places to hike and we even rode the bikes a bit so all in all it was a really great time. We’ve decided Bandy Creek is a great spot for our fall gatherings.
